Synopsis
In 2012, choreographer Mônica opened a ballet school inside a favela's residents' association in São Paulo, in a room barely bigger than a closet. Neighbors asked why Paraisópolis needed ballet when it still lacked basic infrastructure. Thirteen years later, her first students are professional dancers earning real salaries, teaching the next generation, touring stages once unimaginable from here. Sustainable Development follows that transformation beside economist Ladislau Dowbor's blunt diagnosis — development doesn't arrive, it gets built — alongside a 31,000-hectare Atlantic Forest reserve where a century-old company is learning the same lesson in trees and water instead of pliés. That first room in the residents' association is still standing. It was never the whole story — it was the blueprint.
