Making a Film With Grandparents and Neighbours: A Gentle Starter Plan
Stories already live in your community. With a phone and a little patience, young people can help gather them.
Start with a story worth sharing. Ask a grandparent or neighbour about a place they remember, a recipe, a game they played as a child or a skill they learned. The best subjects are ones they love to talk about, not ones they feel pressured to explain.
Ask permission, and keep asking. Explain that you would like to record a short film, who might see it, and where it could be shown. Make sure everyone who appears is comfortable, and let them change their minds. Consent is a foundation of good filmmaking.
Prepare simple questions. Write five open questions together, such as What did the street look like? or Who taught you this? Practise asking slowly, and teach young interviewers to wait through pauses. Silence often leads to the best answers.
Choose a quiet, bright spot. Sit near a window and turn off fans and radios. Hold the phone sideways and rest it on a stack of books so it does not wobble. Sound matters as much as picture, so keep the phone close to the speaker.
Film the hands and the place. While someone talks, record close shots of their hands, an old photograph, the kitchen or the garden. These images can cover cuts and make the finished film richer.
Help with language. If your elder prefers to speak in a language other than English or French, welcome it. Add subtitles later with their help so the meaning stays true.
Edit together. Show them the rough cut and ask what to keep and what to change. It is their story, and they should feel proud of it. Hold a small premiere. Invite the people who appeared, serve something tasty and clap loudly. A film like this becomes a keepsake long after the screening is over.
