A First-Timer's Guide to Youth Filmmaking Funding in Canada

Support for young filmmakers can be found in more places than most families expect.

Funding for youth-made films is often scattered across several kinds of sources rather than gathered in one obvious program, which is why families new to filmmaking sometimes assume none exists.

Provincial and territorial arts councils and cultural agencies may offer programs for young or emerging artists, and it is worth checking their current guidelines directly. School boards and individual schools sometimes hold small budgets for media arts that can support an independent student project. Public libraries and community centres increasingly offer youth media labs with free equipment, which works as in-kind support even without a cheque.

Programs change from year to year, so always confirm eligibility, deadlines and amounts with the organization itself. For a first project, a modest, well-planned budget is usually easier to fund than an ambitious one.
