How Multi-Category Voting Works When a Film Is Up for Several Awards

A strong film often generates more than one nomination — Best Director, Best Lead Performance, Best Film in its section — and it's worth understanding how those separate tracks actually work, especially if you're new to how a jury handles this.

Film-level awards (Best Feature, Best Short) are judged on the finished work as a whole. Role-level awards (Best Director, Best Lead Actor) are judged on that individual's specific contribution, credited through the crew record tied to that film — which is also why accurate crew credits at submission time matter beyond just the profile page they generate.

Judges assigned to a role-level category are specifically evaluating that one contribution against other nominees in the same role, not re-judging the whole film. A film can lose Best Short and still see its director win Best Director, and that's not a contradiction — it reflects two different, independently judged questions being asked about the same work.
