The Volunteers Who Make Festival Week Possible

A festival this size runs on people who never appear on screen.

Every screening, every red carpet, every smoothly run Q&A has a volunteer team behind it that the audience mostly never notices — which is exactly the goal. Ushering, check-in and ticketing, red carpet coordination, photography, social media coverage, translation support, and general set-up and logistics all fall to a volunteer program that trains up before festival week even starts.

Most volunteers don't come from a film background at all — plenty are parents, students, or community members who simply want to be part of festival week. The training is deliberately practical: how to handle a full house with a hard start time, how to help a nervous 10-year-old director find their seat before their own premiere, how to keep a Q&A line moving without cutting anyone off mid-question.

If you've ever wondered what it's actually like behind a festival's public face, volunteering for a single day is the fastest way to find out — and it's one of the more common paths into a longer career in festival programming.
