What Makes Kids' Animation Different From Animation for Everyone Else

The technique matters less than most people assume. The timing matters more.

It's a common assumption that animation aimed at kids just means simpler art — bigger eyes, brighter colors, rounder shapes. Style matters far less than timing, and timing is where most first-time animators actually struggle.

Kids read facial expression and physical comedy on a slight delay compared to adult audiences, which means beats that feel perfectly paced to an adult editor can land a half-second too fast for a 6-year-old to fully register. Successful children's animation tends to hold a reaction shot a beat longer than instinct suggests, and to repeat a visual gag's setup clearly enough that a young viewer isn't left catching up.

This is true regardless of technique — stop-motion, 2D, a phone app with simple frame-by-frame drawing all succeed or fail on this same timing sense, not on production value. Some of the strongest animated shorts we've programmed in Made by Kids used the simplest possible technique and nailed the timing anyway.
